Master Anderson, a cross-bench peer since 2018, will give a first-hand impression of how our laws are made, with particular reference to the recent work of the House of Lords. He will reflect on the composition and constitutional role of the House, the legislative process, the quality of our statute law and what participation in the legislature has taught him about the vital legal skill of statutory interpretation.
Facilities Operative
£24,300 per annum

In this full-time role (37.5 hrs pw), reporting to the Facilities Manager, you be working under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor and in conjunction with Contracted Staff to provide an efficient response to general maintenance requests including furniture moving to support the Events Department. To provide the cleaning team support within their contractual obligations to ensure the estates remains clean and safe for public.

While the lives and accomplishments of members of the Temple community are the subject of much research, the fate of their earthly remains receives much less attention. This edition explores the subject of burial at the Temple from the early medieval period to the mid nineteenth century.

Estates Security Officer
Estates Security Officer – £27,334 per annum / £12.51 per hour

In this full-time role, reporting to the Security Manager, your role is to ensure the premises are always secure and safe, dealing with all matters, reporting and escalating issues appropriately.
Middle Temple has a dedicated team of in-house Security personnel, led by the Security Manager. The Security Manager in turn reports to the Director of Estates who runs the Estates Department.
The Security teamwork a roster, 4 days on 12-hour shifts, from 0800 – 2000 or 2000 – 0800, followed by 4 days off shift. This roster is a rotating 4 on, 4 off with the expectation that you will be alternating from days to nights. This roster continues for 365 of the year, including ALL Bank Holidays. The holiday entitlement for the role will include an allowance for working Bank Holidays. Overtime opportunities are available.
This role is vital to the security of the Middle Temple estate which incorporates many heritage buildings housing barristers’ chambers, residential units, an Elizabethan Great Hall and Temple Church. Extensive site wide network installations are in place for CCTV coverage, proximity card access, intruder alarms and fire detection systems, and you would be expected to become familiar with all of these, as well as conduct regular security patrols of the Estate.
We’d love to hear from you if you have experience or transferable skills in the following:
- Carry out security duties as directed by the Security Manager. These include regular site patrols, monitoring of CCTV and other systems, and responding to intruder and fire alarms.
- Provide a strong, reassuring and friendly point of contact for professional and residential tenants, Middle Temple staff, and the public.
- Answer calls to the Middle Temple Security telephone number promptly and politely and respond immediately to requests for assistance.
- Respond to incidents and emergencies calmly and professionally, using good judgement, knowledge of law and Inn procedures to bring them to a successful conclusion.
- Remove persons not permitted on site from the premises in a professional manner.

Master Jones is a senior consultant in public and constitutional law at Linklaters LLP, and was previously Treasury Solicitor and head of the Government Legal Department. He explored recent and potential developments in public and constitutional law, including judicial review, human rights and the rule of law, and the implications of the change of Prime Minister and government.
1622 The King's Prerogative - 2022 The Prime Minister's Prerogative
The Rt. Hon. the Lord Judge of Draycote will examine the constitutional struggles in the early part of the 17th Century and will suggest that there are a number of disturbing parallels today.
He will argue that, notwithstanding the sovereignty of Parliament, the steady accumulation and use of political and prerogative powers by recent Prime Ministers would have delighted the early Stuart kings and confounded Parliamentarians like Edward Coke and John Selden.
The practicalities of catering at the Middle Temple were very different in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - this edition explores the complex and sometimes chaotic world of the Inn’s kitchen and buttery.
Governance Officer
Salary – £34,000 - £37,000 per annum DOE

In this full-time role, reporting to the Governance Manager, you will be assisting in providing administrative support for the Inn’s governance functions, including Committees, and supporting the Inn’s members, especially the Treasurer, the Deputy Treasurer and the Inn’s most senior members (Masters of the Bench).
- We’d love to hear from you if you have experience or transferable skills in the following:
- Providing administrative support to Committees, including preparation, drafting, and distribution of agendas and supporting papers.
- Supporting the administration and effective delivery of projects and programmes.
- Preparation of annual committee calendars, including liaising with the relevant staff and Committee chairs to identify requirements and appropriate dates and updating Annual Programmes as required throughout the year.
- Supporting all Committees, particularly the Standing Committees, with issues relating to membership or Committee timetabling, ensuring new Committee members receive an induction; and ensuring papers align with the governance framework.
