The Hon Sir Peter Bristow Scholarship

This scholarship is on hold and is not currently accepting applications.

The Hon. Sir Peter Bristow Scholarship was instituted in 1978 to help barristers "to study the workings of the institutions of the European Communities in the places where they are established and in particular the workings of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg".

Applications are invited from members of all the Inns about to be Called to the Bar or already Called to the Bar.  The panel will have regard to the suitability of candidates to act as an ambassador for the Bar of England and Wales at the European Court of Justice with reference to criteria which include but are not limited to:

  • The motivation and realistic potential to practise at the Bar of England and Wales
  • The firm intention to do so in the year in which the scholarship ends
  • The personal qualities of the candidate
  • Knowledge of EU law
  • Knowledge of the French language

Priority may be given to suitable candidates who have not previously benefited from other equivalent awards. The selection panel will, if it thinks fit, create a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed.

The scholarship can be expected to include the following elements:

  • approximately three months in the chambers of Judge Vajda at the European Court of Justice;
  • approximately three months in the chambers of the British Advocate-General at the European Court of Justice, Eleanor Sharpston QC (Master Sharpston).

The scholarship is worth £9,000.

At the conclusion of the scholarship, a report to the Inn of the time spent in Brussels and Luxembourg should be submitted to the Scholarships Officer.
